How do I manage personal information online?

Today you can do almost anything online - you can do your banking, manage Centrelink payments, buy and sell things, book appointments and more.

As you become more confident in using the web, and start exploring things like online shopping or social media, you'll find that you need to share a range of personal information, such as your name, email address and credit card details, in order to access some information and services.

This personal data is very valuable, so just as you keep your personal documents safe at home or in your wallet, you also need to look after your personal information online.

Keeping your information safe

It's important to check whether the website asking for your information is reputable and will handle your information securely.

Think about the kind of information, and how much of it, you're comfortable providing. Key information, like your date of birth, should rarely be given out.

Check any online forms you fill out carefully; while certain information, like your name and email address, will often be essential to provide, extra details may be requested that are, in fact, optional.

Before you create an account or complete an online form, it's important to read the privacy terms and conditions. By signing up, you may be agreeing to allow the company to distribute your personal information, which can result in you receiving unwanted emails, known as spam.
